Nun Alisha:

Passage from Coles Point Virginia to Cape Canaveral Florida.

On November 17, 2025, I was asked to crew on sailing vessel RE. I immediately accepted as this would be my first ocean passage. On November 21st I met Chrischan at Richmond international airport, Chrischan returned his rental car. We were off to Coles Point to begin on getting acquainted with RE. This entailed all safety, systems and where everything is in RE.

On November 22, 2025 at 10 am we said our goodbyes to Brittany Bowman at Coles Point, Brittany took videos as we sailed out of the marina, she also kept in touch with us as we progressed down the coast. She is awesome that way. So glad Michèle remined me to pack warm clothes. The first couple days were so cold, especially at night. I remember Chrischan coming off watch I was sitting in the saloon with two jackets and a blanket wrapped around me, he laughed and said you must be cold.

Exiting the Potomac was pretty much uneventful, zero wind and listening to a noisy engine, as we entered the Chesapeake the wind picked up. Down the Chesapeake we went Chrischan constantly getting weather updates. All was good and it was time for Chrischan to take a nap. My first night watch on RE took me down the Chesapeake to the exit where I noticed up to 14 ships on AIS. Some anchored, some entering and some exiting, all going up to 21 knots. It was time to wake up Chrischan. He assisted in navigating the exit of the Chesapeake to the Atlantic, he shouted “Welcome to the Atlantic“, this was time for real sailing.

Chrischan took over and I went to sleep; I woke to a flying parasailer. It was a beautiful sight, we were flying downwind for a short while. The wind slowed, it was time to start the engine. The destination was Cape Hatteras NC, as we were rounding Cape Hatteras I noticed our speed slowing. This was due to getting close to the gulf stream, Chrischan changed course, and we headed off too Little River where we met up with sailing Vessel JOBBER. This was our rest day.

Had a wonderful evening, playing the Mexican Train game and sun downers with the couple from sailing vessel JOBBER. Dinner after that evening, there was fresh Tuna, green salad and a rice salad prepared by the Chrischan, as always delicious.

We went to bed early with the alarm set for 6:15am. I woke with the sound of the water pump running with; this I knew Chrischan was awake and getting ready for the day. My alarm began to ring shortly after; I immediately got out of bed and prepared for the day ahead. At this time the Chrischan was preparing RE for our passage south (turning on all electronics, checking the weather and informing me of what to expect). It was time to raise the anchor and depart the Little River, just north of Myrtle Bech.

The engines were warming up; I was at the helm and took instructions from Chrischan as he raised the anchor. We began our departure through the Little River inlet with SV JOBBER leading the way. Once we were in the open ocean Chrischan once again checked the weather to decide as to a sail plan. It was the ParaSailor turn to fly, we began raising the ParaSailor and rigging the lines, up it went and we began to fly. Making miles south towards Florida. The plan was Jacksonville, but that soon changed to Cape Canaveral. The passage was mostly downwind with some bumps in the night as the wind changed.

We continued down the coast setting our course to Cape Canaveral Florida celebrating thanksgiving dinner prepared by Chrischan, we arrived a little over three days later. Sunday we went to shore to get some much-needed exercise in the warm Florida weather. It was time for me to plan my trip back home; we went out for a farewell dinner and the next day Chrischan dropped me off at Orlando Airport. What an amazing passage this has been, thank you so much Chrischan and Michèle for inviting me to join RE as crew. I would love to join as crew anytime you need me to.

Klar, dass ich heute alte Bilder von Alisha raus gesucht habe? ….
